ARTIST Terry O’Brien

Graduating from Crawford College of Art and Design in 2006, Terry concentrated on other aspects before relocation to West Cork where he once again found painting. In 2014 he began The Selfie Project which ended with a four week show at St. Peters North Main St. Cork in 2018. Terry is currently exploring new subject matters with a view to more personal work.
Terry studied at Crawford College of Art and Design, graduating in 2006 with a major in printmaking. Also having a passion for music, Terry worked as a sound engineer in Cork city until 2017.
In 2013 Terry relocated to West Cork where he rediscovered his love of painting. In 2014 he formulated The Selfie Project, a study of the selfie in a fine art context. The culmination of the selfie project was twenty two pieces, sixteen of which were shown in August 2018 for one month in St Peters, North Main St. Cork, for four weeks. Two pieces sold. Terry is now exploring new subject matter. Broadening his painting vocabulary to create more personal works alongside commissioned portraits.

My primary focus is portraiture. Ever since i could make a fist, I clutched at anything that could make a mark. Recording the human form and in particular the face, has been a passion of mine since a young age.
Although realism is a goal, it is not what drives me. Finding a likeness is not necessarily the most important aspect of a portrait, but more, getting a sense of the person I am recreating.
Of late, my painting has become more varied in subject matter. This will help me build my vocabulary as a painter an help me explore myself as an artist through new works.
