This work stems from my research into cosmology, the artwork illustrates a juncture in scientific thought in the 14th century. Each piece represents a solar system, one is Ptolemaic or geocentric, the other is Copernican or heliocentric, with the central spheres representing the earth and sun respectively. The concentric shells are the celestial crystal spheres, denoting the orbits of the planets. The only way to differentiate them is the small ball on the edge of a shell, this represents the moon travelling with the earth which denotes the Copernican model. The angle of the Copernican piece is steeper, in ascendancy. While the Ptolemaic is more relaxed, subordinate.

Both visions of the heavens are visible within the scope of history and the cross-pollination of ideas is shown by the shared mechanical underpinnings of each model. The iron casting was produced in July 2018, during the IRON-R 18 event at the National Sculpture Factory, Cork.
