In Bits (Have a Cuppa Tae)

This is the first in a series of 4 paintings made in response to the unavoidable centenary celebrations of Ireland’s independence. I was thinking a lot about the concept of a nation and how flimsy it really is, to quote Benedict Anderson – “the nation… is an imagined community.. imagined because the members of even the smallest nation will never know most of their fellow members… yet in the minds of each lives the image of their communion” (1983)
