The piece stems from research into astronomy and the impact of lenses on scientific inquiry. The title, the form and the shapes made by its action all pertain to the idea of ‘expanded seeing’: telescopes, lenses, focus, optics, astronomical observations and cosmological structures. Temporality and viewer engagement are also important elements in the work, as it twists and winds itself up it goes through different phases of action and stillness, ephemerality and solidity. If viewed over a certain amount of time you can witness an arresting visual snap that marks the transition between these phases.
