Touched by Our Own Loneliness’ performs the tension of resisting touch. The idea here was to get as close as possible to another body without touching, focusing the attention on gesture and mirroring.
I documented my thoughts throughout the process of filming the work:
I could feel the tension in my fingertips. I was trying to touch and trying to resist at the same time. The space between us was full of yearning. Hope and resistance. I focused my attention on your hand. Your hand I long to touch. Your hand I long to resist. We move together forwards, backwards, closer and apart. It’s easy to flow with you. It’s always been easy until now. There is darkness and there is light. There is the opposite of everything. What keeps us together when we are apart? We convince ourselves the other has more control but, when it shifts, we still feel nothing. We are used to change. I focus on your fingers. They move so gently, shyly. They are so timid around mine. I try to focus but I look in your eyes. They tell me things your words can’t. I remember to resist again. I wish now that I didn’t. We both want to control. We both know we no longer can.
