Enrique Hernandez
Enrique is a figurative artist and creative researcher. Born in 1992 in Madrid, Spain, he now lives and works in York, UK. His work captures the intricate and often conflicting facets of human experience, exploring themes of vulnerability, strength, and the interplay between emotional intensity and quiet introspection. With an approach that prioritises emotional authenticity over traditional technique, Enrique’s art transforms raw materials into visual narratives, challenging viewers to confront both beauty and discomfort.
Central to Enrique’s practice is a commitment to honesty, both in content and process. He draws inspiration from personal experience, cultural immersion, and collaborative relationships. These experiences have led him to focus on the “common human,” working not only with professional models but with people from diverse backgrounds, capturing emotional realities of vulnerability, cultural heritage, mental health, and local identity. Each collaboration becomes a personal and artistic dialogue, embedded within the artwork itself.
Over the years, Enrique’s creative journey has spanned diverse geographies and communities. During a six-month period in Australia, Enrique explored emotional expression through experimental life drawing sessions, which included unconventional approaches such as musical integration.
He collaborated with artists from different disciplines, engaged with Aboriginal art and its cultural context, and began a longer-term project investigating art as a tool for empowerment and mental health. Enrique has continued this line of work with the East London Strippers Collective and through ongoing collaborations at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid and the Kunstfuck Art Studio in Budapest, as well as mixing life drawing with musical and theatrical performance in London.
Enrique’s work emphasises the interplay between form, movement, and emotion, using techniques that bring depth and immediacy to his creations. From experimenting with thickened gouache, textured resins and layering of oil pigments, wax and powders, to the intentional use of colour and contrast, Enrique transforms his pieces into immersive narratives that challenge and engage his audience.

Artist Statement
Enrique’s art is a pursuit of truth. His practice seeks to unveil the raw and often uncomfortable realities of human life, exploring fragility, desire, loneliness, and the duality of existence, and his work speaks to the strength found in vulnerability and the beauty in imperfection, offering viewers a space to reflect on their own emotional landscapes.
Enrique’s work emphasises intentionality in every detail, from the interplay of textures to the strategic use of colour and contrast. By collaborating closely with his models and engaging with their emotions, movements, and stories, he creates art that is both deeply personal and universally resonant. His paintings are not just visual objects but emotional dialogues, and they invite viewers to confront beauty and discomfort in equal measure, challenging audiences to explore the delicate balance between fragility and resilience in the human condition, and offering an experience that is both visceral and transformative.
