“The lost connection
within the earth, and its energy,
retains a great fascination for me”

Anne Martin Walsh

I am a multidisciplinary visual artist based in Co. Wexford.
My practice explores themes of sexual and cultural identity that relate to our natural environment.  My work has been shown both nationally and internationally.

Anne Martin Walsh, MFA, Ba Hons (1st class) in Art, is a multi-disciplinary artist whose work is rooted in landscape and landscape rituals that question ideas of gender through the lens of archaeological, historical, religious, and spiritual practices. She interrogates her own sense of place and how we, as humans have left our mark on the earth through the ages. Central to these works are, themes of sexual and cultural identity that relate to our natural environment.

She has been awarded many residencies, the latest of which are;  Cill Rialaig Artists Retreat, September, 2023 & March 2025, and the Cahir Arts Studio Residency Award from South Tipperary Arts Office for 2022/23.

She received an ArtLinks Bursary from WCC Arts Department in 2020 and 2022 and the Agility Award 2022 and 2024 from the Arts Council of Ireland. Anne was chosen to be part of the MAKE/Curate Programme with WAC and the Arts Department of WCC for 2023/24. Her work has been shown nationally and internationally. Solo shows include: A MIND’S EYE, 2023, My Bones are Creaking Hawthorn, 2022, NATURE COLLATED, 2021, and VIBRATION. Embracing a Higher Connection to Our Planet, 2020. Anne Martin Walsh is a member of Nua Collective.

I like to engage in quiet conversation with nature, gleaning knowledge from an intimate connection with the elements and then using this experience to produce art which invokes a sense of spirituality and an awareness of ongoing environmental issues.

Artist Statement

My practice revolves around painting, and printmaking, sometimes installed in combination with sculptural elements. The work is rooted in landscape and landscape rituals that question ideas of gender through the lens of archaeological, historical, religious, and spiritual practices. I interrogate my own sense of place and how we, as humans have left our mark on the earth through the ages. Central to this research and work are themes of sexual and cultural identity that relate to our natural environment, referencing a range of topics taken from history and mythology. The research can involve an examination of geomagnetic ley-lines, ancient sites, carvings, including the Sheela-na-gig, and rituals such as divination. The feminine and the sacred play a significant role in my methodology.

I am interested in colour, the layering of paint and different forms of mark-making, working intuitively. The work becomes more about the medium as a painting evolves, allowing a certain ebb and flow while encouraging the plasticity of the paint.

Through my work I aim to suggest a state of flux and reciprocity between past and present, earthly and otherworldly, seen and unseen. Work that is ritualistic and grounding. A physical and spiritual connection to the earth, as well as an awareness of environmental issues, is at the core of all my artwork.

Abstract landscape-inspired collage with a deep blue, textured sky filling most of the canvas. A central mountain-like form in layered shades of green, teal, and cream emerges from a reddish-brown base. The left side is framed by vertical bands of green, yellow, and red, while three small yellow dots sit near the bottom right edge, adding a subtle visual rhythm.
