108 Salutations for Spring II

LISTEN: Audio Description:

My work is driven by ritual and repetition, so with this diptych I sought to create a ritual for myself that would welcome spring. For the first layer, I collected leaves from my daily walks and from the houseplants I water every day, and hammered them between the two sheets of paper.

Each element on top of that – stamped leaves, circle outlines, shapes created with small circles –  became an added meditative layer. 108 is a sacred number in multiple traditions, and I finished the piece by making 54 hash marks on each drawing, signifying wholeness and new growth.
