Katrīna Tračuma recounts painting a beloved garden en plein air as sunset, winter cold and darkness steadily close in.

As sunlight steadily evaporated and everything around me lost its focus, all while my fingers became numb and foreign, I kept on painting the last en plein air piece of 2025.
Capturing the beloved garden of a family friend, the greenhouse posed the most challenging of structures. As someone who detests architectural, urban, straight edge, straight line, sharp corner captures in painting observations – most of the time spent painting this piece, was used up on that damn greenhouse.
The colours of the sunset, the curved lines and funky shapes of the trees, and the tones of grass blades made for much more pleasant subjects of painting on oils.
“These two companions were actually my last visitors while I was working away on the piece, as the winter darkness engulfed us.”
However, the piece is not yet complete as it will be enlivened by the addition of a certain dog and cat duo who frolic in this garden daily. These two companions were actually my last visitors while I was working away on the piece, as the winter darkness engulfed us.

It was in kindergarten that a pact was made between two friends to become vegetarians on their 12th birthdays. After nine years, Katrīna made the transition to veganism, and this lifestyle choice has actively informed the work that she makes ever since. Thus, her work is political in nature, as is her existence – a queer feminist who lives with chronic pain. Art as activism is the main motivation for her practice. Expressing her concerns with global issues, which are affected by society on an individual scale.
